School of Optometry and Vision Science

Life at the School of Optometry and Vision Science

There’s more to university life than study. In our school you will engage with staff and fellow students along with members of the optometry profession.

Life in the school is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Due to the smaller class sizes you will get to know your fellow students and staff members alike and have the opportunity to form friendships and working relationships with future colleagues.

Each years group of students (part) has responsibility for organising several social and course related events. These include:

  • BBQ and Sports Day – typically takes place in the warmer months in the Domain which is close by. Organised by the students.
  • Optometry Ball – Part IV students organise the Annual Ball, book the venue, liaise with prospective sponsors etc. They choose the theme which is ‘Optometry’ related.
  • Pub Crawl – this is organised by the Part II students early in the new year as a means of getting to know your classmates and students from others years in the programme.
  • Camping trip to Kai-Iwi Lakes – all Optometry students are invited to this annual camp which is held at the end of the examination period in Semester 2.
  • Annual Optometry T-shirts – a new design is produced every year as a memento.
  • Equipment purchases – students are required to purchase Optometry equipment for use during their studies and also when they graduate and head out into private practice. This is done at the end of Part II and coordinated by the Part III students.
  • NZAO Awards evening – held March/April to celebrate and present a number of awards given by the NZAO (New Zealand Association of Optometrists)
